Hotel Lenado

Say the name “Lenado” to a seasoned Aspenite and they’ll point to the hills over Red Mountain. Lenado is a sleepy, high-alpine ghost town snuggled into a grove of snowy pine trees in the hills and canyons east of Aspen. During Lenado’s boom years, about 300 miners lived in a camp seeking fortunes in lead and zinc ore. At the turn of the 20th century, this now-sleepy hamlet claimed a sawmill, a general store, a post office, and a handful of whiskey barrel saloons. The road over the mountain connecting Lenado with Aspen was never built and this boorish old west village faded into obscurity.

Hotel Lenado keeps the alpine soul and animated spirit of this Rocky Mountain mining camp alive in a downtown location convenient to Ajax Mountain. In fact, Hotel Lenado is only one block away from the bus stop, easy access to Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Buttermilk.

Opened in 1984, Hotel Lenado is a locally-owned boutique ski chateau with casual mountain elegance and intimate B&B hospitality. The hotel’s design is a unique fusion of colorful neo-Victorian architecture with wooden interior accents. Features like a mammoth front porch, timber rafters, sweeping views of Ajax, and a crackling hearth give Hotel Lenado country flair with splashes of modern-day class.

The 19 elegantly appointed rooms boast rustic four-poster hickory or carved applewood beds cloaked in cushy down comforters and quilts. The mountain ambiance is furthered by cherry wood furnishings and shared balconies for incredible vistas of Red Mountain, Smuggler, Ajax, and downtown Aspen. The Smuggler Rooms include wood stoves nestled into the corner. Delightful creature comforts like flat screen TVs, terry cloth robes, a wet bar, and twice daily maid service will make your stay as cozy as possible.

For evenings, head to the romantic rooftop deck overlooking Aspen Mountain. A hot tub on the roof allows you to relax and soak weary muscles. In the morning, a full gourmet breakfast including fresh coffee, juice, fruit, pancakes, eggs cooked to order, ham, bacon, cereals and the mouthwatering Grand Mariner French Toast await you. When you’re finished skiing for the day, heated boot lockers and ski storage are on the house, making for a hassle-free mountain-to-apres ski transition. Don’t miss the complimentary hors d'oeuvres and hot apple cider served in the quaint bar before guests doll-up and head out on the town for dinner.

Rates at the Hotel Lenado are relatively affordable, even in the winter and summer peak season. With its old fashion boutique charm and warm hospitality, the Hotel Lenado is an excellent choice for a romantic getaway.
