Flying Dog Ranch
The next owner of George Stranahan’s Flying Dog Ranch in Woody Creek will have some hefty boots to fill. After 40-some years of living at Flying Dog Ranch, Stranahan’s has managed to wrangle the western frontier dreams of an aspiring young cowboy into a life and a livelihood. Flying Dog Ranch is where he personally raised and ranched a herd of Colorado Limousine Beef Cattle, cultivated an avid interest in photography, started the nationally-distributed Flying Dog Beer, began distilling premium Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey with a neighbor, launched a boutique publishing company, opened the Woody Creek Tavern and Community Center, and raised a family.
Known as the sire of Woody Creek, Stranahan is the heir to the Champion Sparkplug fortune, the founder of the Aspen Institute of Physics, and holds a PhD in Physic from the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University.
Unlike other high-end properties in the Aspen Real Estate market, the 245-acre Flying Dog Ranch boasts a colorful history dating back to the silver boom. The majority of the property is nestled into a canyon following the mile-long descent of Collins Creek. The house itself is located atop a spectacular mesa with arguably the most majestic mountain panorama in Colorado, boasting views of Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, Maroon Bells, and Mt. Sopris. An additional section of the ranch is a lush meadow hugging Woody Creek. This section of the property was formerly used for cattle grazing.
The high country homestead sits on 245 majestic acres a mere 15 minutes outside Aspen. The rustic house is a comfortable log estate built by the Stranahan family and Woody Creek neighbors over the course of a summer. The property includes nine bedrooms and six bathrooms total. Additionally, there are three ponds, two mesas, and a swimming pool overlooking the Woody Creek Canyon and the Elk Range. Directly bordering the National Forest, Flying Dog Ranch is an idyllic setting to hitch up horses in the existing stable near Woody Creek Road. Other property highlights include water rights, miles of private trails and roads, multiple barns, fields, a historic homesteaders cabin, a straw bale house, and freestanding living structures. The backyard of Flying Dog Ranch is the 2.3-million-acre White River National Forest, making this ranch a dream come true for the discerning hunter or angler.
Because of the special and unique nature of the property, four separate parcels have been designated for buyers. Also, the 600-acre Bear Dance Ranch bordering Flying Dog Ranch is for sale, meaning buyer seeking land – and lots of it - can own over 800 acres in Woody Creek, just minutes away from downtown Aspen.
